FCV Academy returned to National League Alliance action against fellow high-flyers Basford United, falling to a 3-1 home defeat in the first match after the Easter break.

Both sides squandered early chances, but it was the visitors who were first to take their opportunity. An in-swinging corner caused the home defence issues, and the ball was tapped home from close range.

It was another set-piece that got Grant Brown’s side back in the game before the break, with Ilja Fjodorovs providing the delivery. His fine free-kick was met by Lewis Saunders and, although the centre-back couldn’t quite convert, Sven Hart was on hand to fire the rebound home.

Despite positive words from Brown at the break, the Academy resumed for the second half in a sluggish manner, and Basford were soon ahead once again.

After that setback, FCV set about chasing an equaliser but couldn’t find a way through the stubborn Basford defence. Pushing forward, the hosts were subsequently caught out on the break – the counter-attack leading to a third goal.
Next up for FCV is another National League Alliance fixture on Monday, against Nuneaton Town.

Then, on Wednesday, it’s a return to English Colleges action against Derby College, before Friday's showcase match with special guests from Zimbabwe.
